Most Loft conversions can be built under permitted development rights, meaning you don’t need planning permission as long as certain conditions are met, such as not exceeding the volume allowance or extending beyond the existing roofline. However, there are exceptions for example if you live in a listed building, conservation area or if you want to build beyond the limits imposed under the permitted development rights. Extensions will require planning permission.

A general guideline is to have a minimum of 2.2 meters of headroom at the highest point of the loft, but if you don't have enough headroom Johnny has some good design tricks or there may be the option to lower ceilings in the rooms below.

Yes building regulations will always apply to all loft conversions and extensions to ensure safety and structural integrity. If you go ahead with your project you will be asked to instruct an independent building inspector who will carry out routine inspections and sign off the work carried out. This cost is not included in our standard package as this is an independent service and not a contractor working on behalf of JL Lofts.

A loft conversion can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project but typically we complete most builds within 4-6 weeks. Extensions again will vary but typically we complete most extensions within 6-8 weeks.

No this is not necessary, however, you’re having major building work on your property so please be prepared for some noise and disruption particularly if you work from home or have a new baby etc. Johnny and team will do their best to minimise the disruption where possible.
